Richie Incognito, Jonathon Martin, ESPN and the anti bullying agenda

The true story of Richie Icognito and Johnathon Martin is more complicated then ESPN has let it be known.  Yet the FACTS are readily available.  Somehow one voicemail released by Martin's agent has decided the whole case, when preponderance of the evidence is that Jonathon Martin has a mental illness, not that we was bullied by Incognito.  Let us look at the facts and strictly facts not feelings:

Jonathon Martin makes about 2.5 million and is in his second year with the Miami Dolphins.  Six Months prior Richie Icongito left a voice mail on Jonathon Martin's phone, of which we have no context too.  But, Martin did post on twitter about his work out regime.  Incognito then called Martin, most likely to give a sarcastic message.  Does anyone think that voicemail was serious?  Was it stupid to send? Yes Was it malicious probably not.  And if it was sooooo bad why does Martin not share it with anybody but keep it to himself.  He could have gone to anyone a coach, a fellow player anyone.  But he keeps it to himself.  Why? Please do not say bullying.  The man was a twenty four year old who graduated from Stanford with two parents who are lawyers, he knew his options.

Then over the next 6 months nothing is said or done.  Jonathon Martin participates in the same prank that causes him to leave the team on Nate Garner.  Martin goes out to dinner with Incognito and his girlfriend before the Saints game.  Now according to ESPN and specifically Chris Carter every coach and player should have definitely known about the "bullying".  Did Carter go on and provide evidence following his rant, no.  Because, too may at ESPN are using the pulpit to grandstand while the truth is being sought.

Fact: Jonathon Martin left the Miami Dolphins because of a prank, not a mean prank, just a prank.  Is that something a bullying victim does? But, where does Martin go when he leaves the Dolphins, he goes to the hospital to get mental help.  He did not go anywhere else but the hospital.  This clearly establishes that Jonathon Martin suffers from a Mental illness.  On Thursday of that day, Jonathon Martin sends a text to Incognito reported by Jeff Darlington stating that it had nothing to do with Incognito and that Martin was fine.  It is journalistic malpractice that this text is never mentioned on ESPN.  Again this is not the act of a bullying victim but more a person with a mental illness.

Fact Sometime on Thursday or Friday Jonathon Martin flies to California to see his parents.  Now is where it gets complicated, the Dolphins then place Martin on the Non Football injury list, the same day.  This is important because it means that Martin cannot get paid.  However, if it is bullying Jonathon Martin would get paid.  Why is that significant Jonathon Martin's parents are lawyers.  That Saturday and Sunday AM we have the first reports of bullying reported by Jonathon Martin's parents, Adam Schefter.  This is the act of lawyer parents wanting to make sure that their son gets his money.  The Dolphins respond by saying there was no bullying, now does anyone think if the Dolphins knew something they would respond like that (I mean other then Chris Carter and the ESPN talking heads).  Incognito proclaims his innocence on twitter stating the proof will come out.  Does this look like the actions of people that thought their was bullying.

Then the Voicemail is released and ESPN gets so far up on its high horse it cannot see the ground.  Keyshawn Johnson (kicked out of the Tampa Bay Bucs locker room), Ray Lewis (covered up a double murder) and Mike Ditka (coached via bullying) all get on their high horse.

But when the locker room is opened, all the players back Incognito, former players on other teams.  It comes out the Vegas story and the story about the restaurant check were false as indicated by Lyndon Murtha and Will Davis.

All unbiased signs once the facts are show the pro bullying forces have one voicemail.  When the preponderance of the evidence indicates Jonathon Martin is mentally ill.  Jonathon Martin needs help for his mental illness.  But ESPN and the sports media in general needs to look at actual facts instead of the narrative that fits their agenda.

Adam Schefter vs Richie Incognito explained

As many have seen Adam Schefter appears to have a fascination with Richie Incognito.  Recently Adam Schefter came out with a story about Richie Incognito bullying Johnathon Martin.  As you have heard unless you have been living under a rock, Martin left the team due to bullying.  Adam Schefter's report seemed to focus all of the spotlight and blame on Incognito.  Nobody knows the truth.  But Adam Schefter should not be take as a serious journalist in this instance he has been wrong too much.

In July Schefter reported that Incognito had punched a bouncer at a club.  The police report did not indicate that, and it was Incognito not the bouncer who had injuries that were consistent with a punch.  Clearly, Adam Schefter's report was wrong, Schefter chose not to ever air a correction nor did he apologize.

But Schefter was not done, prior to the Cincinnati Bengals game, Schefter said "The Dolphins have an expansion level offensive line according to his sources."  What sources name the names, Miami had just ran for over 100 yards against the Patriots.  Do the Dolphins have a good offensive line, no they clearly do not.  But why would Schefter take a gratuitous shot at the Dolphin's offensive line by hiding behind sources.

Schefter has been wrong before, the benefit of the doubt in this situation should go to Incognito not Schefter.  When Dolphin fans roll their eyes when Schefter reports there needs to be some background.

Bill Barnwell's inept take on the Miami Dolphins

Bill Barnwell writes for Grantland for the NFL.  So that automatically makes him smart according to the conventional wisdom.  Now I do not think that Bill Barnwell hates the Miami Dolphins, he was exceedingly optimistic on the Dolphins heading into 2010 at one point comparing Chad Henne to Drew Brees.  The point is, he is not a Dolphin hater.  What Bill Barnwell is, is lazy.  He refuses to look up just rudimentary stats.

Here is the link to his preview on the Dolphins:
http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9629356/bill-barnwell-nfl-teams-worse-2013

He predicts the Dolphins to be worse then 7-9 last year, which is fine.  I have not written a take down of Peter King who predicts the same thing.  But at least King's reasoning is grounded in facts.  Barnwell's preview is lazy, the laziness that Grantland supposedly stands against.

A stat that Barnwell sites repeatedly for the teams listed also in the article is fumble recovery rate and how if it is over 50% it will most likely regress the next year.  He does not site that statistic with the Dolphins, why? Well on defense Miami forced 19 fumbles recovering 6 and on offense the 17 fumbles 8 recovered.  So in other words Miami had really bad fumble luck especially on defense.  By Barnwell's own admission which he sites on other teams, that should improve, thus the Dolphins should improve.

One other point about the Barnwell preview, during the Colts preview he states Indy will start 2-0 because they play the Raiders and Dolphins, who they are clearly superior too. Last year, the Colts beat Miami by 4 points when a late drive fizzled, and Sean Smith dropped an interception.  Also in that game, Miami was repeatedly hurt by Jake Long getting beat off the corner repeatedly.  It is quite clear that Bill Barnwell did not watch this game or look at a box score or recap.  Otherwise fact less statements about the Colts being clearly better then the Dolphins (by the way I think the Colts will beat the Dolphins too in that game, I doubt it is clearly though).

Now to Barnwell's actual preview, he discusses that he does not think that the Dolphins improved in all the areas.
He asks are the Dolphins better off with their additions:
Is Mike Wallace upgrade over Brandon Marshall? Marshall has not been on the team in two years now, I fail to see this point.  And as anybody who has watched the Dolphins the last three years, knows the team has lacked a vertical threat to stretch the field.  Is Wallace a better vertical threat then Marshall the answer is yes.
Is Daniel Ellerbe really better then Dansby?  This argument is so poor it is laughable.  Dansby when he was cut loose had to settle for a one year deal with the Cardinals, and that was not because he is so awesome.  The Ravens were prepared to sign Ellerbe to a 5 million a year deal.  That right there should indicate an improvement.  But here are some stats for the stats guru (who curiously sites very few):
If you read Barnwell you would think Dansby is this great player, except for the fact he had a whole one sack last year.  Ellerbe not even playing a full year had 4.5.  Again, this would require Barnwell to do actual work.

Then he goes to the Jake Long argument that Martin will not be better then Jake Long.  Jake Long last year gave up 4 sacks in 12 games.  As anyone who watched a Phins game would tell you, he is not the same player he was.  Was Martin bad in right tackle last year, the answer is yes.  But here is another number for Barnwell 0 that would be the amount of sacks Martin gave up in the pre season at left tackle.

He then goes on to criticize the Dion Jordan pick.  Stating they already have Cameron Wake.  Actually, Bill that was a huge problem for the Dolphins last year.  Sacks for Cameron Wake:15 for defensive ends not named Cameron Wake: 3.  Now he wales about Jordan not being the cant miss player you should trade up for.  Uggh he was the unanimous top defensive player in the draft.  He may not be can't miss, but that argument is weak.  A stronger argument would be pointing out Jordan has been hurt the whole pre season.  But then again that would require somebody to actually do research.

Now he gets on Miami missing Tannehill's safety valves such as Reggie Bush (average a little over 2 catches a game, came off the field a lot on third down because he could not block).  Anthony Fasano averaged 20 yards receiving a game,  replaced by Charles Clay who averaged 15 yards receiving per game.  Then there is Devone Bess, crazy its almost like Barnwell did not realize Miami signed Brandon Gibson in the off season who has only 10 less catches then Brandon Gibson.
Then Barnwell writes some prose about direction and views, its almost like he wrote this article just to write the end of it.  Facts be damned.
Oh I did not even discuss Sean Smith over Brent Grimes.  Stats be damned:

Evan Silva irrational hate of the Miami Dolphins EXPOSED

Evan Silva loves to blast the Miami Dolphins and Jeff Ireland.  Does Evan have a point?  It is true four straight losing season is pathetic, there are no excuses.  But has Evan crossed the line from hatred to personal obsession.  The stupidity he spews for a write and supposedly unbiased analyst has reach hysterical proportions.  Here are some examples:

This is what Evan tweeted after Lance Louis was released:

zombies now defending GM's decision to blow $125k on a player who never gave them a snap. 4 straight losers & hungry for more.

Umm so Evan's basic point is you should not risk less than 0.2% of your Salary Cap on a proven starter at guard coming off an injury. Are we going to start blasting every GM who takes a chance on a player coming off injury and the player does not make the team. The fact is this was High Reward Low Risk. It did not work out. But to blast Ireland for that indicates a personal axe not cognizant analysis.

Here is an article he wrote read his analysis of Daniel Ellerbe:
He writes Ireland notorious for overpaying free agency, notorious from whom. Who have they grossly overpaid. Jake Long would disagree, Eric Winston would disagree, Reggie Bush would disagree. I mean talk about throwing a line out there.

The funny part is when he complains about the Brian Hartline signing which was below market value. But, Ireland somehow overpaid, that is the statement of a hack.
Also, Evan criticizes Ireland for the Ellerbe, and Wheeler signings. Now just a minute of research he could have found that Ireland essentially traded Dansby and Burness for Ellerbe and Wheeler. For the same money he got quicker and faster, in the linebacker position. Granted I have the benefit of the pre season where Ellerbe has been dominant. But, still if you work for a website take two and half minutes to do some minor research before sounding like a moron.

This is perhaps my favorite tweet of Evan Silva's
whiffed on Cook, Long, now Osi. Just like old times. Ireland...
This would be so funny if Evan had not listed Jake Long as his 11th most overpaid free agent. Does he not read his own work?
I could go on and will. The guy is a hack who has no business writing for a major website
